Best One-hit Wonders for 2006

An collection of tracks from 2006 from artists not otherwise mentioned in my Best of Worst Music of 2006 series in no particular order. Unfortunately a lot of the albums they come from are pretty average.

Sex Changes – The Dresden Dolls (Yes Virginia)

Dresden Dolls at their best. Powerful and meaningful

Bump – Spank Rock (YoYoYoYoYo)

Minimalist very catchy pop

Standing In the Way of Control – The Gossip (Standing In the Way of Control)

A belyingly intelligent rock song

Funny Little Frog – Belle & Sebastian (The Life Pursuit)

Silly and fun.

Your Touch – The Black Keys (Magic Potion)

The Black Keys’ swampy blues track is immediately likable

Don’t You Think It’s Time – Bob Evans (Suburban Songbook)

Leaving behind the rocking for a while, Jebediah’s front man finds his inner pop

Crazy – Gnarls Barkley (St. Elsewhere)

Great production and such lovely vocals. One of the big crossover hits of 2006.

Smile – Lily Allen (Alright, Still)

A lazy, summery-sounding track initially seems like a nice happy tune, until one listens to the lyrics

Roka – Calexico (Garden Ruin)

There just seems to be an attractive mystery and seduction in whispered vocals and music

Hand-Me-Downs – Soul Position (Things Go Better with RJ and AL)

Great hip-hop from RJD2 and Blueprint

Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living – The Streets (Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living)

Poor old Mike Skinner is rich and famous now yet life is just as tough dealing with his new set of problems

Vicarious – Tool (10,000 Days)

Tool doing what Tool do best, rocking out.

Downtown – Peaches (Impeach My Bush)

Lovable, wholesome Peaches
